What are the benefits of a career in taxation?
Are you academically advanced and enjoy challenges? Taxation is a challenging and rewarding career in South Africa, with its constantly evolving regulatory and complex socio-economic landscape. Other than providing exciting challenges, what other advantages are there to becoming a tax practitioner? Let's look at a few of them.
Clear career
Tax practitioners have one of the most stable careers in the commercial environment. As Benjamin Franklin quipped, “In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes". There will never be an oversupply of tax practitioners to serve other professionals and small businesses that lack the interest, aptitude, and time to manage their tax affairs
Demand
As of 2022, the list of scarce skills in South Africa has been released and tax professionals are one of the skills in demand in South Africa right now. The benefit to you is that you have a good chance of landing a job. Currently, 26.6% of South Africans are unemployed, and with an accredited tax certification, it is unlikely that you will be part of that statistic. Besides plenty of opportunities, sought-after skills are also higher-paid, and who doesn't want more money, right?
Flexible barriers to entry
Unlike many other number-crunching careers, there are flexible ways to get qualified as a professional. The duration of tax technician and tax professional occupational certificate courses ranges from 18 to 30 months, during which you complete a practical workplace component to be eligible to apply for the EISA board exam (after which you can register for professional body membership).
Recession-proof
Taxes must be filed regardless of the prevailing economic conditions, and during downturns, companies and individuals need professionals they can trust to make sure they are not over-exposed to tax obligations.
