[FAQ] Taxation of an honorarium

This article is based on tax law for the year ending 28 February 2022.

Background

I have a medical doctor as a client. He has received a president's honorarium from SASTM. Is this considered as taxble income?

Answer

An honorarium is normally paid by organisations to compensate for services rendered by professionals when the remuneration is not commensurate with the fee that would have been paid had the service been procured at competitive rates. It would need to be included as part of the taxpayer’s income because it is not a fortuitous receipt that is unconnected with the trade or profession of the taxpayer
