Specialist: Systemic Investigations
Francois Viljoen joined the Office of the Tax Ombud (OTO) in 2015 and is part of the Legal Services and Systemic Investigations division. His responsibilities include conducting systemic investigations to identify and address issues within the tax system, with the aim of improving efficiency and fairness. He also provides legal support and advice within the context of tax ombud operations.
Viljoen began his career by completing his articles at the medium-sized auditing firm Anderson Rochussen van der Bijl Incorporated in Johannesburg from 2007 to 2010. During this period, he gained practical experience in auditing, accounting, and financial reporting.
From 2010 to 2015, he worked at the South African Revenue Service (SARS), where he held various roles, including Operational Specialist: Audit, conducting audits and ensuring compliance with tax laws. As Team Leader: Audit, he managed a team of auditors, oversaw their work, provided guidance, and ensured that audit objectives were met.
His career reflects a strong passion for auditing and tax compliance, with a particular focus on enhancing tax systems and processes.
Viljoen has a solid educational background, holding a B. Accounting degree from the University of the Free State, a postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Pretoria, and an MBA from the Gordon Institute of Business Science, University of Pretoria. Additionally, he has completed an Advanced Trust Course at the University of Pretoria, South African Customs Compliance Parts I and II, and ISO 9001:2015 Understanding and Implementation, as well as the ISO 9001:2015 Lead Auditor course.
