Fathima Dawood CA(SA)

Fathima Dawood CA(SA) is a Independant Tax Consultant, bringing over two decades of experience across tax consulting, corporate in-house taxation, and academia. Her career reflects a combination of technical depth and practical, industry-facing experience, spanning professional services, a JSE-listed corporate group, and higher education.

At PKF Durban, Dawood reviews and technically assesses corporate tax returns, manages tax disputes and SARS engagements, and drafts formal tax opinions on complex matters for clients and internal stakeholders. Her responsibilities extend to transfer pricing support, advisory on Carbon Tax legislation, and analysis of legislative amendments for submission to National Treasury as part of PKF's National Tax Committee review process. She began her career as a trainee article clerk at PKF Durban (formerly David Strachan & Tayler), returning to the firm in 2025 as Senior Tax Consultant. Between these two positions, she served as a Senior Tax Associate at Bowmans Law, where she led VAT and PAYE reviews for major clients in the logistics, financial technology and banking sectors, and secured a successful VAT ruling on behalf of a client.

Between 2014 and 2023, Dawood held the role of Tax and Derivative Manager at RCL Foods Ltd, where she carried overall responsibility for group tax compliance, reporting and SARS relationship management across income tax, VAT, PAYE, Carbon Tax and the Sugary Beverage Levy. She led the group's response to major legislative developments, including the VAT rate change, the implementation of Carbon Tax, and Country-by-Country transfer pricing reporting, and provided technical tax training to finance, creditors and asset management teams across the organisation.

Dawood's academic career includes a period as Taxation Lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), where she coordinated the Tax and Estate Planning 300 module, developed course material aligned to the SAICA competency framework, and introduced a practical e-filing project giving students hands-on experience with tax return submissions. She also served UKZN as an Academic Development Officer and Tutor, supporting at-risk undergraduate students, and later returned to the university as an external examiner and moderator between 2015 and 2019.

Dawood holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting), a Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Accountancy, and qualified as a Chartered Accountant (CA(SA)) in 2008. She completed a Leadership Development course at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) in 2019 and is currently in the second year of an LLM in Taxation, expected to complete in 2026, having passed the first year cum laude. She serves as a member of SAICA's National Tax Committee and SAICA's Eastern Region Tax Committee, engaging directly with the South African Revenue Service on technical matters and contributing to the development of tax policy.

Across consulting, industry and academia, Dawood has maintained a consistent focus on translating complex tax legislation into practical guidance for practitioners and businesses — a perspective that continues to inform her contribution to the profession's ongoing professional development.
