This answer is based on tax law for the tax year ending 28 February 2020.

Answer:

From the information provided it appears that you received condonation for the late filing of the objection and that you are unable to submit the objection.  This is because the codes don’t appear on the assessment.

You will have to determine what gave rise to additional assessment and reconcile that to the IRP5.  In other words, what amount that appears on the IRP5, doesn’t appear on the IT34. In essence you must do a calculation of the amount of tax payable, based on the information that appears on the IRP5.

The use of code 3697 is not the problem.  We suspect that it is the amount of R8 113 – next to code 4003.  It related to “Current and arrear provident fund contributions”, which didn’t qualify as a deduction under the legislation as it read at the time.  A deduction can only be made in respect of contributions made on or after 1 March 2016. The amount will appear on the IT34 as contributions not allowed.

It is strange that the employees tax withheld by the employer was not sufficient.  There may well be another problem.
