17 August 2020: Payroll compliance and how to deal with a SARS Payroll audit

9 September 2020: VAT 201 compliance

Completing a VAT201 declaration is a basic compliance requirement of any registered VAT vendor. This is even required from certain non-resident suppliers of electronic services to South African residents. The form itself is not very long and doesn’t contain many fields. However, it is important to have a proper understanding of what each field means and to be familiar with the VAT201 process. In this webinar, we will decode the VAT201 form to ensure that the fields are completed correctly and provide an accurate reflection of the true nature of transactions and related VAT consequences.

This session will look at the following issues:

  • Common VAT terms and transactions.
  • Decoding the VAT201 form.
  • Common eFiling concerns.
  • What to do when there is an error on the form.

 

15 October 2020: Estates compliance

When an individual passes away, the focus is mostly on the estate duty consequences of property owned on the date of death. What is often overlooked is that a brand-new taxpayer comes into existence on the date of death of a natural person: The deceased estate. This webinar is aimed at providing an overview of the processes and responsibilities related to the administration of a deceased estate. Delegates will obtain an understanding of the legal requirements as well as the responsibilities of the executor.

This session will cover the following areas:

  • Who needs to register the estate?
  • Forms required by the master’s office.
  • Responsibility of the executors.
  • An overview of the liquidation and distribution account.

Carmen Westermeyer

Carmen graduated in 2001 from the University of KwaZulu-Natal [UKZN] (formerly known as the University of Natal), with a BCom Honours degree in Accounting and completed her articles with PwC in 2004. She has been a member of SAICA since then.

Carmen stayed with PwC for a year as Assistant Manager, venturing into the world of commerce in 2006. In 2008, she was appointed as a lecturer at UKZN and coordinated the Taxation 300 course until December 2010. From 1 January 2010, Carmen took over the role of Academic Leader for the Taxation Department, as well as the coordination of the Postgraduate Taxation Programme. During her time as Academic Leader she had numerous opportunities to liaise with SAICA on issues relating to the ITC, as well as being a member of the Tax Committee.

In December 2012 she started running ad-hoc training courses for members of the profession. From December 2013, she moved into commercial training and consulting on a full-time basis. She has been involved in various training activities, such as the SAICA SMP training in 2014 and the FASSET Budget and Tax Update in 2015 and 2016.

Mandy Graaf

Mandy completed her Chartered Secretary South African qualification whilst working for Deloitte from 1997 to 2001. In 2001 she joined a local firm of Chartered Accountants and Auditors in Pietermaritzburg. She was promoted to financial manager and headed up the accounting practice covering trusts, close corporations, small companies, partnerships, farmers and individuals. Wanting to pursue a career in tax, she left this firm in February 2014 and joined Ash, Hellberg & van Rooyen Chartered Accountants.

 During her position as Tax Manager and heading up the entire tax practice, she completed her HDip Tax and ADip Tax (Advanced Diploma in Tax Procedural Law) through Thomas Jefferson School of Law and passed both with distinction. She started running her own tax practice in September 2016 specialising in dispute resolution, trusts and SARS compliance.
