Short Course in Fundamentals of AI in Tax Practice

Price: R1 950

Lecturer: The Tax Faculty Academic Team

Artificial intelligence is transforming tax practice alongside SARS Modernisation 3.0 and the move towards more digital, data driven tax administration. This short course equips practitioners to use AI responsibly, assess its risks and apply appropriate human oversight. Using a practical South African case study, participants learn to classify AI use cases and understand how tax data is generated,...

Overview

Artificial intelligence is entering tax practice at the same time as tax administration itself becomes more digital, data-intensive and connected. SARS Modernisation 3.0 contemplates entity-based compliance, real-time risk profiling and advanced analytics. The Tax Administration Laws Amendment Act 4 of 2026 has inserted a legal framework for structured e-invoicing and voluntary e-reporting. The practitioner must therefore understand not only how an AI system produces an answer, but how tax data is generated, transmitted, reconciled and scrutinised across practice software and revenue-authority systems.

This short course treats digital competence as part of professional tax competence. It does not present AI as a substitute for tax knowledge. It develops the framework needed to decide when AI may assist, which capability suits the task, what can go wrong, and what level of human review is required. South African evidence makes the point directly: in a 2026 study, four of five AI models tested failed CTA-level tax questions while still producing persuasive answers.

The course is built around a recurring South African practice case, Mzansi Tax Advisory, and closes with an applied risk-classification exercise. Practitioners complete it able to classify tax-AI use cases as low, medium, high or prohibited risk, and to design the human oversight each one requires.

Mode of Delivery

This short course is presented on The Tax Faculty's online learning Campus. It is self-paced: interactive study notes, a diagnostic pre-quiz, end-of-notes self-checks and a facilitated discussion forum allow the course to be completed from anywhere, at any time.

Duration and Effort

This short course is available to learners to complete at their own time and pace.

  • Approx reading hours: 10 hours
  • Approx applied work (discussion forum, applied activity and case study): 15 hours
  • Recommended length to complete: 2 weeks

What you will Learn in this Course

The following modules will be covered

  1. The digital transformation of tax practice.
  2. AI technologies: machine learning, natural language processing and large language models.
  3. Capabilities, errors and evidence standards: why AI produces plausible but incorrect outputs.
  4. The AI-enabled revenue authority: Tax Administration 3.0, SARS Modernisation 3.0 and e-invoicing.
  5. The AI-enabled tax practice: software, the changing professional role, ethics, POPIA and governance.
  6. Tax-AI risk classification and applied practice.

Outcomes

  • Distinguish artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, generative AI, analytics and rules-based automation, and select the right capability for a tax task.

  • Explain why AI systems produce fluent but incorrect tax output, and apply a verification protocol against primary sources.
  • Explain SARS Modernisation 3.0, entity-based compliance and the 2026 framework for structured e-invoicing and voluntary e-reporting, and their implications for VAT, payroll, trusts and exempt institutions.
  • Evaluate vendor claims about accuracy, productivity, compliance and security in tax and accounting software.
  • Apply professional ethics, POPIA and confidentiality requirements to AI-supported tax work.
  • Classify tax-AI use cases as low, medium, high or prohibited risk, and design the human-AI division of labour and approval points each requires.

Admission Requirements

This is a short learning programme (SLP). Learners require digital and numeracy literacy and a laptop or PC with high-speed internet access. A working knowledge of South African tax compliance is recommended; no technical or programming background is required.

This Course is for

  • Tax practitioners and tax accountants who already use, or are being asked to use, AI tools in client work.
  • Practice owners deciding which AI and automation tools to adopt, and under what controls.
  • Reviewers and managers who sign off work they did not draft.
  • Finance and in-house tax professionals preparing for SARS modernisation and VAT e-invoicing.

Accreditation

This course is presented as a short learning programme (SLP) by The Tax Faculty. The Tax Faculty is accredited with the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations as a skills development provider (SDP) under the Skills Development Act, 1998 (Act No 97 of 1998) and by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) as an ATSA training provider.

Assessment and Award of Certificate

A diagnostic pre-quiz, checkpoint questions and an end-of-notes self-check are included in the course, together with a facilitated discussion forum on the Mzansi Tax Advisory case. Learners are assessed through a final integrated assessment: a risk-classification matrix of twenty practice tasks, a critical justification of approximately 1 500 words, and a recommendation to the practice principal. Successful learners receive a Short Learning Programme (SLP) certificate of competence issued by The Tax Faculty. In addition, this programme qualifies for 15 verifiable CPD hours in the category: AI Technologies.
