The knowledge and practical skills gained in this bridging programme for experienced tax practitioners will provide course participants with the foundational knowledge and practical skills to perform SARS tax compliance functions and services, including the preparation and submission of tax returns.

Course overview

Completion of this course, as well as the knowledge, practical skills and workplace experience modules, provides entry into the final external integrated summative assessment (EISA) which is administered by the South African Institute of Tax Professionals (SAIT) and the Quality Council of Trades and Occupations (QCTO) at an additional fee.

On successful completion of the EISA, you will receive the Tax Technician Occupational Qualification from QCTO. Successful learners will be eligible to maintain/apply for membership of SAIT and the designation Tax Technician (SA).

This programme is for you if:

-    You are experienced in tax yet need an NQF level qualification to continue working as a SARS registered tax practitioner.
-    You want to obtain accreditation and recognition for previous training and experience.
-    You want to gain the required practical and technical skills to complete the latest income tax and VAT returns.

Who is required to complete this qualification?

It is a strict requirement of SARS that registered tax practitioners upskill their matric qualification within three years from registration with SARS and an RCB.

Completion of this accelerated programme and EISA exam (with SAIT) will secure you the required NQF 6 level qualification to remain a registered tax practitioner with SARS.

What will be covered?

At The Tax Faculty we recognise that you have gained significant prior experience over a number of years whilst working in the field of tax. For this reason, we recognise your prior learning (RPL). We give you the maximum credit (exemptions) towards your occupational NQF 6 qualification. At The Tax Faculty we will never waste your time to study topics in which you are already competent. Our exemptions process (RPL) address this issue.

Therefore, the core to The Tax Faculty learning ethos include a unique process to identify your individual learning needs against the competency framework across the tax knowledge and practical skills required to complete the qualification. Your specific learning needs are identified through our diagnostic measuring your knowledge and practical skills competencies.

With your prior work experience, a number of the topics will be exempted (RPL). However, the fundamental knowledge competency framework includes the following areas:

Knowledge component

- Tax administration.
- Taxation of business.
- Accounting.
- Personal income tax and trusts.
- Corporate income tax.
- Value-added tax (VAT).
- Payroll.
- Dispute resolution at a basic level.
- Capita Selecta: speciality taxes.
- Ethics and professional conduct.
The practical skills and workplace experience components will be a unique learning module based your prior experience.

Minimum admission requirements

Applicants must have recently attended one of the following educational programmes:

-     Annual tax CPD programme updates with SAIT.
-    Short course in tax/accounting (Unisa CTAX course, UCT Tax Law Course with GetSmarter or the Enterprises University of Pretoria Taxation certificate course).
-     SARS internal functional training courses.
-     Higher Certificate in Taxation/Accounting.
-     National Diploma in Taxation/Accounting.
-     National Diploma: Financial Accounting (ICB).
-     National Diploma: Technical Financial Accounting (ICB).
-     Accounting technician qualification.
In addition, applicants must have at least three years of work experience in tax, accounting and/or bookkeeping.

Course duration

18 months.

Mode of delivery

The course delivered via The Tax Faculty's virtual campus and webinar platforms whilst the final exam (EISA) is administered by the South African Institute of Tax Professionals (SAIT) at and additional fee.


The qualification is registered at a level 6 on the National Qualification Framework (NQF) via the Occupational Council for Trade Occupations (QCTO) as follows:
  • Occupational Diploma: Tax Technician at NQF Level 6 SAQA ID 94098.
The Tax Faculty is a registered skills development provider under the Skills Development Act, 1998 (Act No 97 of 1998) on this qualification. Accreditation number QCTOSDP00180420.

Assessment and award of certificate

The final qualification is awarded by QCTO after successful completion of the external integrated summative assessment (EISA) is conducted by the South African Institute of Tax Professionals (SAIT) as the Assessment Quality Partner of the QCTO.

In order to gain entry into the EISA, learners need to successfully complete a number of formative and summative assessments conducted via The Tax Faculty. These lead to a statement of results from The Tax Faculty and a partial completion certificate issued by The Tax Faculty (NPC).

Candidates who complete the EISA successfully will be eligible to apply for membership of the South African Institute of Tax Professionals (SAIT) and the designation Tax Technician (SA).

Course fees

Payment option 1: Once-off payment 

Once-off payment: R27 500.00.

Payment option 2: Debit order

Application fee (non-refundable): R450.00.

12 instalments: R2 635.00 per month.
Total: R31 620.00.

* First debit order will be collected on course start date. Remaining debit orders will be collected on the first working day of each month.

Payment option 3: SAIT members in good standing discount

Once-off payment: Qualify for a 50% discount.

Monthly options: Application fee (non-refundable) of R450.00 and a 25% discount on the total amount.

* The discount will decrease the number of debit orders and not the monthly amount, thus 12 months would become 9 months of debit orders.

Payments and cancellations

  • All required minimum payments must be made by direct EFT or by credit card before the commencement of a course. The once-off payment is required to be paid before the course start date, as well as the application fee of learners on a debit order plan (the first debit order is also required on the start date of the course).
  • Kindly note that should debit order payment terms not be adhered to; legal action will be taken and access to the online learning platform suspended.
  • Proof of payment may also be requested before access to the iLearn platform will be communicated, should your payment not reflect on The Tax Faculty’s bank account.
  • Only written notice of cancellation will be accepted.


For courses shorter than a six-month rollout, the following will apply:

  • If the cancellation is requested more than 10 working days prior to the course start date, no cancellation fee will be applicable.
  • If the cancellation occurs less than 10 working days prior to the course start date, a 100% cancellation fee will be applicable.
  • Students who register for a course and fail to attend will be held liable for the full course fee.
  • The course application fee is non-refundable.
  • The Tax Faculty’s liability in the case of a course being cancelled will be limited to a refund of the course fee.

For courses with a six-month or longer rollout, the following will apply:

  • Should a cancellation be received within six weeks of the course start date, the student will still be liable for 50% of the semester cost.
  • Should the cancellation be received after six weeks of the course start date, the student will be liable for the full semester cost.
  • Once a learner has registered for a course, they will only be granted one deferral opportunity for that course (a deferral includes either requesting a new start date or changing to another course). Costs applicable will be adapted upon notice of deferral received. 
  • The course application fee is non-refundable.
